About the Customer: TOKYO SHOSEKI Co., Ltd.

TOKYO SHOSEKI CO., LTD.. is Japan’s largest and most trusted textbook publisher, with a history spanning more than a century. Founded in 1909, the company publishes official, government-approved textbooks for elementary through high school education across the country.
With approximately 500 employees and approximately JPY 30 billion (USD 200 million) in annual revenue, TOKYO SHOSEKI plays a central role in Japan’s education ecosystem. In recent years, the company has evolved from a traditional publishing house into a major player in digital education and EdTech services.
Through platforms supporting online learning, digital assessments, classroom management, and teacher development, TOKYO SHOSEKI is helping shape the future of education in Japan — reaching millions of students under the country’s GIGA School Initiative.
The Digital Shift: From Textbooks to Scalable Cloud-Based Learning
To meet the needs of modern classrooms, TOKYO SHOSEKI has launched several high-impact EdTech services built on cloud-native architecture. These include:
● Total ID: A unified account management system for single sign-on across internal and external education services
● Tabudori Live!: A digital drill optimized for school-issued GIGA devices.
● NIMOT!: A creative learning portal designed to help students explore and express personal interest

As the company expanded its digital offerings, a critical challenge emerged: different teams had developed separate tools, each with its own authentication and infrastructure. This fragmentation increased complexity — both for internal development and for end users (students and teachers alike).
The rapid nationwide rollout of learning devices through Japan’s GIGA School Initiative further underscored the need for scalable, integrated infrastructure that could support millions of concurrent users — securely, reliably, and without interruption.
Why TOKYO SHOSEKI Chose Beyond
TOKYO SHOSEKI needed a partner capable of delivering:
● High-performance cloud infrastructure at national scale
● Integrated development and operations support
● Strong concurrency handling during peak usage periods
● Agile communication and bilingual collaboration between business and engineering teams
Beyond Co., Ltd. stood out for its proven track record with high-load, real-time platforms — including gaming infrastructure — and its ability to consolidate engineering, DevOps, and infrastructure into a unified team.
Our work began with Total ID, where we designed and deployed a scalable authentication and access system that could serve millions. From there, our support expanded to other platforms like Tabudori Live! and NIMOT!, enabling secure delivery, consistent availability, and responsive issue handling.
Performance, Reliability, and Team Integration

Today, TOKYO SHOSEKI’s digital education systems serve over 2 million users with high uptime and responsive support — even during periods of peak school-year activity and mass rollouts.
Key results include:
● Rapid incident resolution with direct access to engineers
● Tight collaboration between application and infrastructure teams
● Shared operational documentation and handover readiness across teams
● 24/7 proactive monitoring and issue detection before user impact
Our engineers weren’t treated as outside contractors — but as trusted members of TOKYO SHOSEKI’s extended team.
“When we consult Beyond, they don’t just solve the problem — they take the time to explain it clearly, even to non-engineers. That makes our internal communication easier and helps us grow, too.” — Koji Miyashita, TOKYO SHOSEKI (NIMOT! Team)
